Port Columbus Airport’s Origin

Columbus’ Port Columbus Airport opened on July 8, 1929. The airport was the idea Don Castro Sr., who lead the effort to pass a bond issue to purchase the airport’s land on the east side of Columbus, which included dispatches from his trip about the Graf Zeppelin over the Atlantic Ocean. Castro also gave the land-locked airport its unique name.
