Once an industrial center anchored by Federal Glass and Buckeye Steel, residents still use the phrase “Steel and Glass” to describe its heritage. Many of them are descendants of the Hungarians, Croats, and Appalachians — black and white—who found jobs at those once-thriving manufacturers.
Once an industrial powerhouse, the South Side’s “Steel and Glass” heritage is still honored by the people who live there today. In a neighborhood created by everyone from Appalachian migrants to Hungarian immigrants, it remains a place of strength, diversity and resolve. South Side is currently experiencing a huge revitalization. The Church for All People has spearheaded several community outreach campaigns through partnerships with the city, state, and Children’s Hospital. These include the building of new houses, the restoration of old houses, a free pharmacy and health care space called Health Station, and a free store. [youtube lQGw0TLXn7k]
