Formerly located on East Markison and South Champion, Crystal Pool was the summer resort of almost everybody on the South Side.
Established in 1900, Federal Glass would eventually become one of the largest producers of glassware in the U.S. At one point, it processed 500,000 tons of molten glass each day.
Rising out of the diverse workforce of the factories was the Steelton Neighborhood. The workers of the factories, regardless of culture or language, called it home.
One of the most rapidly growing manufacturers on the South Side, Buckeye Steel was a prime example of the industrialization of Columbus. the working conditions were hard, and at one point the company had an employee turnover rate of 300 percent. Despite this, the company grew from 400 employees in 1904 to 2000 in 1916.
Located in the heart of what is now Merion Village, the old German shooting club is now the food pantry for St. Luke’s Church.
