King Gambrinus Statue
It is said that the King Gambrinus statue, located half a block north on S Front and W Sycamore, is modeled after August Wagner, one of the first brewers in the brewery district. He was known for his robust personality and flamboyant promotions, such as allowing people to smash rocks on his stomach with sledgehammers.
Schmidt’s Sausage Haus
Opened in 1967, just a year after Schmidt’s Packing House closed down, Geoff and George Schmidt entered the restaurant business. Located at 240 E Kossuth Street, Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus was an integral part of a unique urban renewal being taken on by the community as a whole.
Schmidt’s Packing House
Founded in 1886, Fred Schmidt’s packing house began serving the finest meats to its customers. It remained the family business for generations until it closed in 1966.
German Village: Immigration and the National Road
Early German immigrants to Columbus purchased cheap land to the south of the city limits and established a community there. Significant numbers began to arrive around 1840 and by 1865 one-third of the city’s population was German.
