Schwartz Castle

Located on South 6th Street, the “Haunted” Schwartz Castle, as it has come to be known, was the home of a wealthy druggist named Frederick Schwartz. His odd habits gave rise to rumors about him in the later years of his life, and after his passing people began to say that he roamed the castle.

The Great Southern Hotel

Located at 301 S High Street, the Great Southern Hotel was built by German interests in an attempt to bring more trade to the southern (German) end of town. The hotel is still in use today as the The Westin Columbus Hotel.

Located between Livingston and Downtown, Central Market was where anything the German Village resident could want to eat could be found. It was one of four major market areas in Columbus.

St. Mary’s Church

Established in 1863, St. Mary’s provided residents with a spiritual meeting place and an education for their children. It helped to assimilate the German children into American society by teaching them English.

King Gambrinus Statue

It is said that the King Gambrinus statue, located half a block north on S Front and W Sycamore, is modeled after August Wagner, one of the first brewers in the brewery district. He was known for his robust personality and flamboyant promotions, such as allowing people to smash rocks on his stomach with sledgehammers.
